My company recently has one project and the vendor has shifted a new W2k
server here, but we found that it was installed with an evaluation copy of
W2k Server and it has expired. We can't use the system at all.

We requested the IT personnel to reinstall the server OS. However our IT guy
has resolved this problem by going to the hardware CMOS (BIOS setup)
date/time portion and revert back the date to abt one year ago. He said this
will make the software as it is not yet been expired, and can be used
throughout the project period. The only thing is we need to bear is the
system date/time different (earlier than current).

My doubt is: does this really work? Please advise. I don't wish that the
project may be affected in the middle due to the server OS expiration
issue....

Thanks!

Hello,

In 2000, we use Kerberos which time is very important. The KDC server's
clock and the Kerberos client's clock have to be synchronized to within a
specified number of minutes. If the clocks are not synchronized within the
specified number of minutes, tickets are not issued to the client. This is a
deterrent in Replay attacks. Settings are in minutes. Default value: 5
minutes. If you change the time on this DC, you will also have to change
the time on all other machines connecting to this DC.

If you want to be sure that you will not encounter any problems, the best
thing to do is to upgrade to a full version or obtain another eval copy.
The eval copy is only good for 120 days.
