eTrust: "the handle is in the wrong state"

For years, I've used Computer Associates' eTrust EZAntivirus
on a number of people's computers and have been quite happy
with it.

Recently I've noticed that on just a couple of computers the
program now seem to have a problem updating their AV sig files.
Most computers still work fine, but when these few try to
contact the download server, it's unreachable, often with the
rather cryptic message that "the handle is in the wrong state
for the requested operation". Yet, I can FTP to the site and
download the needed file manually.

eTrust's help page at http://snipurl.com/cwhh claims that
"Typically, this error is given due to an invalid proxy server
address entered in either the AutoDownload options or Internet
Options for Internet Explorer." This is clearly bullshit, as
I have no proxy server, and the computer's settings have never
changed from default.

Any thoughts?

I don't know what your problem is but it looks very similar to my main
pooters refusal to autodownload & install MS updates giving a useless
error message forcing me to do it manually. MS answers to the problem
are many but none are relevant. My problem started after SP2 + a
couple of auto-updates worked OK then it fell over. I suspect a
re-format re-install of this pooter which has been running for a
couple of years now would sort it but I just manually download the
updates for now till I have a spare couple of weeks to re-install it
all.

You have to bear in mind that any error message thrown up by software
is merely a rough idea of where the software thinks the bug is, and
not necessarilly anything to do with the root problem just the final
outcome of it.

Does any of this seem familiar?

Oh, yeah. In fact, one of the computers that was getting the error
message worked perfectly this morning, leaving me to suspect that the
problem might have been on the eTrust server.

Wouldn't be the first time for *that*, either.

Lol, I spent 2 hours last week trying to get my router on line after
an booting up and finding no internet.

When I gave up and used a dial up modem I got an e mail saying
"Broadband will be taken off line for 6 hours for maintenance"

Never checked the obvious did I just cursed and threw my toys around.

Durrrr!

I've actually known a few people in that situation who've called
their service provider and asked if there's a problem with the
Internet... "yeah, lady, the Internet is down..." :-D
