In Etrust 6.17 we could elect to save the downloaded update file. this
could be used if a reinstall or format hard disk was needed. (It was of
course saved in another hard disk location. Now with 6.2 there is no option
like that. And the download file seems huge compared to 6.17. from 1.2meg
to over 2.2 megabytes.

Is this progress? NO way! As a frequent re installer and tryerout of other
programs i find that having to download the definititions every time a bit
of a worry. Some people who only stick with the one program or never have
to reformat and reinstall will probably not complain though.

This new version of the program works differently from the way
you're used to. What you refer to as the "download file" is indeed
approximately 2.1mb in v6.2, as compared to about 1.3mb for v6.1.
However, 6.2 downloads only the "patches" that make up the difference
between what sig info it already has and what it needs. In other
words, it only downloads what's new since the last time. If you're
online daily, this update often amounts to a download of less than
100kb. When you autodownload, you're not bagging your single
"download file", but rather a collection of small patches which
must be applied sequentially. If you study the autodown.txt file
in your program directory, you'll see the mechanism involved.

The 6.2 files are always available at
ftp://ftpez.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/autodownload/sigs
Note the "patches" subdirectory.

The 6.1 files are located at
ftp://ftpez.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/sigs/10.5/

Thank you for the prompt reply. I am still unclear, can i download and save
the signature file and apply that in the case of a reinstall? Then the up
date will only involve updates (patches) since that time onwards thus
saving the complete download?

Sure, you can download the complete sig like the current July 23
vet.signatures-8469.zip, but why? It'll be outdated within a few
days, and if a few weeks pass until the time you do your reinstall,
the total size of all the patches involved will probably be greater
than the size of a new vet.signatures file.

But if you really want to be able to manually install the full sig
file, you can make the process a lot easier by using their VPatcher
utility, available at ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/test/VPatcher.exe
