Have just installed driver, it says everything is ok! but
will not connect and keeps coming up with a network cable
is unplugged, what does it mean??

Are you using the correct type of cable? If you are going straight from one
PC to another you need a crossover cable. If you are going through a hub or
router you need a regular patch cable.

Why did you have install a NIC driver? I've installed hundreds of
NICs from tons of manufacturers. WinXP always found them, picked them
up and started using them with no help from me. Hell, I've found it's
harder to have it NOT use them.

There are two usual suspects here; one is the NIC card and the other one is
the network cable.
If you can satisfy yourself that the NIC is OK. Then your problem lies with
the cable. Improperly prepared network cable is reported by WindowsXP with
that ''network cable is unplugged" message. Another symptom is the
unability to achieve connection (the same 'network cable is unplugged
message') when you set the NIC speed to AUTO, or anything higher than 10Mbps
(assuming you have 100Mbps equipment).
