How can you tell if your tower or computer has a ethernet
connection and if it is working. Im trying to hook up a
wireless router and it says to go from router to back of
computer. There is a port in back that accepts the plug
but the software says its not hooked up..

Go to the command prompt (start-run-cmd-ok), then do an ipconfig /all. If
you have an ethernet connection/NIC (network interface card) on your
machine, then it should tell you here. If it says "media disconnected",
then i would check your cabling and make sure that it is plugged into the
correct port. If it lists an IP address of 169.254.x.x, then your NIC is
more than likely working properly, but you may need to do some
configuration work on your router device with DHCP.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.
