Gurus,

You know how you can get a "splitter" for a phone jack, so that you can plug
two phone lines into the end with two holes and the other end simply plugs
into the wall outlet? Well, do Ethernet "splitters" exist and if so have
any of you any good experience using them? I need this for two computers
who will not be using the line at the same time and it's in an area where I
do not want to put a hub or wireless device.

You haven't ruled out using a switch, then?

Yes. They're normally called "hubs."

If you really don't have space then look into a hub card - that's where you
get a 4 or 5 port hub but its mounted on what is otherwise to all intents
and purposes a network card. Great space saving, does require your pc to be
on, and you may have to hunt to find one.

Spin;

We have a few around here that the original "computer" person used. For any
kind of real network and any OS past W98, it'll be more trouble than it is
worth.

That being said, it will work. We had it that way, without playing with
ports at all, for years on W98 boxes in our Kindergarten rooms.
