I have a Ethernet switch and an extra CAT 5 cable.

I was told that using it would add some extra security when using it
with my cable modem. (AT&T is my provider)

Is that true?

If it's just a consumer grade switch you bought at Wal-Mart, no.

No, a switch is not a router, altough a router
might look like a swith.
My speedtouch(modem/router) has 4 ethernet connections.
I do have a few switches, but they just join 4 lines,
and convert to single cable BNC ethernet, of which I have
4 such stations, Dos 6.22 mainly.

As others have said, no.

Your cable modem, on the other hand, may have some
security-enhancing settings. Look at the dox for
your modem (download from the web if you don't have
any). In my limited experience cable and DSL modems
can be configured with a browser and/or a TELNET
session pointed at its IP address (usually
192.168.2.1).

Of particular interest is NAT - Network Address
Translation - which (AFAIK) makes computers on your
internal network unreachable from outside. You still
should run anti-virus software, though.

Dynex DX-ESW8 Ethernet Switch

Andy

Sorry, but you bought over-priced house-brand crap from BestBuy
(Dynex= BestBuy).

As far as security, this POS doesn't give you anything. Any security you
have is in your cable/fiber/DSL modem". You need to Read The F**cking
Manual (RTFM) on that.

Other than that, the "Dynex DX-ESW8 Ethernet Switch" is probably OK

Regarding Dynex/BestBuy:

I recently needed a CAT5e/6 patch cord while visiting relatives just to
visit, but ended up playing IT to (how well we all know) fix a problem.

BestBuy was 8 miles way (on Sunday). $20 for a 3 foot CAT5e patch??
Bit the bullet, bought it.

Got back, wouldn't talk. It's a royal pain-in-the-ass to ring out R45s
with a fat-probe Harbor Freight cheepie multimeter, but 3 wires showed
"no continuity"..

Bummer.

Lowe's stocks Leviton-branded jumpers, but that was 30 miles away (as
were all the Office "Something" places).

15 footer--- $10 (price has gone up IIRC)

Leviton's consumer stuff is not that good, but at least all 8 wires
"went thru OK". The Loew's "associate" even opened a pair-scanner to
check it. I like that.

Old surprises still exist.

I just heard Elton John's "Talking Old Soldiers" for the
first time. I have no idea how this gem never accesed my
brain before.

It's so damned real to me. Been dere, dun dat.

I did not buy it, it was given to me.

As far as Best Buy is concerned, they lost my business because of very
poor service.

Take care,
Andy
