Ethernet cable + system process bug

I'd like to fill an official bug report concerning an ethernet cable + system
process bug. Where to go? :)

Why don't you state what the problem is? You may well find out that it is
not a bug but an anomaly in just 'your" system. Then we can help you.

There are just too many hundreds of thousands of people using Ethernet
successfully to think that you have found a bug - but it IS possible.

When my ethernet cable is plugged in the "system process" (PID 4) uses up to
30% CPU power, it tends to fluctuate a bit. Its a broadcom chipset, drivers
are up to date. Problem does not happen with Wifi connections. Cant find much
about this on the internet other than "System process using lots of CPU" and
i think i found where it came from.
I think its something with the broadcom -> vista drivers since thats what
"system" does as far as i know.

CPU = 2x 1.8Ghz
Vista = Home Basic

ps. is there a solve for the "power cable plugged out during hibernating ->
resume from hibernate = hang on login screen" solve?

Another thing to note:
Its a HP Compaq 6710s notebook.
Usually using wifi, problem does since the day I bought it though, took me a
while to find the source!

1. have you checked for a BIOS update?
2. checked for a video driver update?
3. checked for a NIC driver update?
4. applied all available windows updates?
5. ruled out that your antivirus is interfering and causing issues?
(what AV and firewall are you using?)
6. what is the computer connected TO?

I have the same problem!

Since I bought it the processor was always in the 20-30% but I didn't
make case

I only noticed this weekend when I installed VS 2008 Beta and the cpu
goes too 60% with cable and without cable goes to 2-3%...

I removed VS2008 and .net 3.5 and back to the normal "20-30%"...

I have a 2x2.2GHz and running Vista Business x64

I don't think the problem is a video driver, AV or firewall. if so,
the problem should happen to with wireless. The NIC driver... is the
latest and with all the windows updates installed.

I have the computer connected to a ADSL router with several other
computers. I disconnect the ADSL cable and all the other computers
cable connected to the router to test if the cause of the cpu is for
managing some not supposed traffic that the computer received.

No difference.

The process that fires when I connect the cable is the System process.
When I connect the cable, the process creates two new threads that
generates the work. The threads are from the ntoskrnl executable.

This thing is making my computer unstable when with some work, as
System process as priority....

It's weird that nobody else as noticed this...

Update:

I uninstalled two more programs(I was going to uninstall something
about my cellphone and this two goes first):

..net compact framework 2.0(forgotten from VS 2008)
a download manager that I even remember is name(uninstaled 5 minutes
ago... thats life)

then I remember to plug the cable before targeting the cellphone
software and... I have a 2-4% smooth processor!

Again.... Weird!!!

Hope this helps!

thanks for the information.

Had a few days off :).

Great to see there are more people with the same issue, (then i know its not
my config! :P)

Driver status:
100% up to date, checked by hand

Items always running:
- Kaspersky Antivirus / NOD32 (changed a few days ago)
- O&O Defrag
- Live Messenger
- HP tools
- Windows Live messenger

Other things to note:
- Manully killed the entire Vista defence set (doesnt start on boot) since
its *
- Router is a Linksys WRT54G, also occurs with a WRT54GL, DDwrt patched.

NOT using VS 2008 Beta, never installed either.

not the same issues. can you disable O&O Defrag temporarily and see
what happens?

Doesnt solve the problem.
It even happens when nothing but vista is running. (tested by switching off
non vista items in config file)

the other thing to look at is the indexing engine and activity it
might be doing. I don't recall you posting what processor and amount
of RAM.

also, have you thoroughly checked your system for malware? are you
running any P2P or torrent programs?

Its a Intel Centrino 1.8Ghz (dual), running 2GB or ram.

Malware not present, I can guarantee you my computer is 100% malware / virus
/ spyware free. Running various tools, Kaspersky on the notebook, NOD32 on
the local server im running and I know how to read Hijack this logs.

Like told above: It even occurs when no programs are activated: eg. nothing
but the bare system running (even antivirus disabled). Indexing is turned
OFF, i dont like it.. eats to much power. Prefetch is ON, Readyboost is OFF.

RAM use on idle is ~ 670mb
Got some time tomorrow, will try to dig in a bit deeper. I might even try to
snatch SP1 Beta and find out if that solves the prob.
