Okay,I've set up a VPN on both of my computers. Running
XP PRO at home and at the office. Both are connected
directly via DSL (different providers) and I've got my IP
addresses. Been unable to connect home to office or vice
versa. Keep getting 800 error message. What am I
missing?

Are you able to ping the home machine from office and vice versa?

I'm at the office and was not able to ping my home computer's address. "Destination net unreachable" was the result. I'll have to wait until later to test from home to office

By directly, are you saying that there are no routers/firewalls
involved? It sounds like there is a firewall on your systems...

Have you forwarded TCP Port 1723 and enabled GRE Protocol 47 traffic, sometimes referred to as "PPTP
Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through" on the firewalls? What firewalls are at each end?

I haven't done either, (not sure how to) I'm using the internal XP firewall. Should I be using a different firewall?

Look at these links for help with PPTP VPN and the ICF...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309524

Note the ICF automatically enables GRE Protocol 47 traffic if you forward TCP Port 1723.

Been working at this from both ends. I still wasn't able to ping home from the office but I am able to ping the office from home. I've forwarded TCP Port 1723 in the firewalls on both ends. I'm still getting the 800 error message when I try to connect by VPN from home to the office. What should I try next?
