At my main office, I have a DSL connection; at the home
office, a cable modem. My cable modem provider apparently
offers only dynamic IPs.

Can I set up a VPN between the two if I can't get a static
IP for the home computer? --diane

You just need to know what the ip of the remote host is at the time you want
to esbalish the connection.

Look at No-IP.com which maps an alias (usually of your choice) to a DHCP assigned IP address. A
small program runs on your PC and contacts the No-IP.com servers on a periodic basis. The server
then maps the IP of your PC to the alias and propagates that over the public internet. It works very
well for me and its FREE.... Go to http://www.no-ip.com for help. Additional like services, some
FREE and some $$$$, can be found on this page...

You would call the remote PC using the alias...

FYI, I do that with an XP Pro box acting as a VPN server and connecting a PocketPC through a PPTP
VPN tunnel once the PocketPC is connected to the public internet.

Understood -- but a little tricky since the remote host is
at a house that is basically unoccupied (kids are at
school, their dad is at work) during the office hours that
I need to make the connection! But I appreciated the
reply, as it does help me better understand what it is I'm
trying to do.

Of course, *after* I posted my original message I saw your
earlier response about No-IP.com. This looks like a really
valuable service, especially for my situation. I
appreciate your taking the time to re-post it without
giving me grief said:

Does No-IP work through a NAT firewall router?

Yep...I use it with my home LAN which is behind a XP ICF as noted on my PPC PPTP VPN page.
