I have a home PC that I'm trying to connect to from work. Both run WinXP
SP2...firewalls turned off for this testing. My ISP is not blocking incoming
requests on my cable\modem at home. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.
VPN, Remote Desktop (RDP), and Port Forwarding are all enabled on the router.
Eventhough I'm plugged directly into my 'wireless' router from my home PC,
I'm still running a Wireless MAC Address Filter.
After registering for a DDNS account (I selected the DynDNS.org option on my
Linksys and established a hostname), my router should have a public IP. It
should be forwarding port requests to port 3389 from the outside world to my
internal
computer IP. It's supposed to have the Dynamic DNS setup on it (Linksys)
and maintained so that I can connect from work to my home PCs.
I've configured the router to properly forward the request on port 3389 to
the
internal IP of my main home pc. And eventhough it's disabled, the Windows XP
Firewall was configured to allow RDP, I've been told that I must have a
username with a password that is allowed to connect to the system with RDP
(Remote Desktop Users group) and the Remote Desktop itself must be enabled.
Again, all is enabled.
I know that I have to reset the router's password from admin to something
else. That's done. But now, how do I connect to my home pc from work?
Now, do I setup a VPN connection (using DynDNS hostname; username/password)
at work then Remote Desktop into my home pc (using local username/password?)
via it's computer name/IP Address? I've had no success. What steps do I take
now?
Please help.
