When I start Windows XP home with a eathernet card, modem
or almost any pci card it stops at "updating ESCD."
Is the problem the motherboard? Have all my cards gone
bad?
Any help would be appreciated.

That sounds like a message you get before Windows XP even begins to load.
Never seen that during an XP load.

I am not understanding your meaning anyway with:
"When I start Windows XP home with a eathernet card, modem or almost any pci
card it stops at "updating ESCD.""

Do you mean when you install a new one?

The system was working fine until I installed a new PCI
card for wireless. After I put the card in and turned the
machine back on it would get as far as updating ESCD and
stop. I took the card out and restarted and it booted up.
I moved one of the other cards to see if it may have been
just one of the slots and I received the same message. If
I take any PCI card out now when I put it back I will get
the same message and it hangs up at "updating ESCD."

Yes, it happens before Windows starts to load so I am
unable to boot from the CD.

What I found using Google...

If the system displays "Updating ESCD..." and then hangs up the boot
process, either with or without displaying "Success", then there is a
problem with updating the extended system configuration data. This is
probably a problem with an expansion card, especially if you just added one
to the machine. It could also be a problem with the motherboard. You should
troubleshoot this as an expansion card problem, and if this fails,
troubleshoot the motherboard.

What that tells me is that either you are having a motherboard issue
(possible revealed by your adding the card in question or caused by it) or a
BIOS issue. Have you checked for the most current BIOS update?
