I want to figure out how eSATA/USB is used. Does the technology allow
me to plug in an eSATA drive without a power cord to the drive?

By comparison, Is it faster than an external USB 3.0 portable drive?
Which doesn't require extra power cable either.

I assume you want to use your eSATA drive in eSATA mode. Your eSATA
drive enclosure should have come with an odd looking USB cable with two
USB connectors at one end and a single connector at the other. Plug
that single connector into the drive box. At the other end of the USB
cable, plug the USB connector (one on the short wire, not the one at the
very end of the cable) into an empty USB slot on your computer. Your
eSATA disk will draw power from your PC, but not use the USB cable for
data transfer. That's done by the eSATA cable running from the drive
box to the eSATA connector on/in your computer.
