I am running into an issue that I need some help with. Im wanting to
start using windows movie maker to see what kind of editing i can do
with it. However, everytime I open it I get this message:
"Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."
and data error report error signature says:
AppName: moviemk.exe AppVer: 2.0.3312.0 ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.2600.2180 Offset: 0001b2af
Does anyone know of anyway to fix this? Im up to date on all the
updates according to the microsoft updates page.

Are you running Windows XP with Service Pack 2?
If you are...have a look at the following article:

is not installed successfully?

after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.
===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

If you want to install or reinstall Windows XP
SP2 you can download it from the following site:
Download Windows XP SP2

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.
It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.
And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.
