Hello Debbie,

Chances are that malware is causing you problem. I would recommend
installing Microsoft's free Windows AntiSpyware Beta from
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx.

Debbie,

What version of Windows are you using? Is this Windows XP? What is the
latest Service Pack installed?

Hello Debbie,

I still believe that the problem being is caused by a third party Browser
Helper Object. To identify the culprit, use Manage Add-ons. You can
normally access this by clicking on Tools and selecting "Manage Add-ons" in
Internet Explorer, but since IE will not open, you can open it a different
way.
1. Go to Start and select Run. Type "inetcpl.cpl" and click OK. This will
open the Internet Options control panel
2. Click on the Programs tab.
3. Click on the Manage Add-ons... button

I would recommend disabling all of the add-ons and seeing if IE will open.
If it does, start enabling each add-on one at a time and attempt to launch
IE. Remove the add-on that causes IE not to launch.

Control Internet Explorer Add-ons with Add-on Manager

If that doesn't correct your issue, I would recommend following the steps

Hi Brandon,
My problem is in reverse, ie IE6 works for a while and then hangs for no
apparent reason (I think this happens when I get deeper into a website's
webpages; it's probably too much for IE6, like having too many windows open
at once or applications open at once, yes?). Have disabled some, not all,
add-ons, especially those I do not currently use and all browser helper
objects. As well, in the process have updated ActiveX controls where
available. Restarted the computer, as suggested, and IE6 launched fine.
Will see how things go for a while. Have appropriate operating system and
security.
