I keep getting complaints that people cannot send mail to some domains
and I have noticed that when browsing the web on the machine (ie :
windowsupdate) it times out or cannot locate the server. ANyone have any
ideas what is going on or what I am doing wrong? Normally the mail
will begin queing and will not send and also I get this error

Message delivery to the remote domain 'domain.org' failed for the
following reason: An internal DNS error caused a failure to find the
remote server.

now i removed the customers domain and added the domain.org for their
privacy. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Is the DNS server on Win2k3?

Just wanted to mention that if I restart the DNS service and SMTP
service it fixes the problem. But obviously this isnt acceptable.

It is a Win2k Adv Server machine. When I say I restart DNS it is the DNS
service in the Services center.

In the DNS server properties sheet on the Advanced tab check "Secure cache
against polution"
DOes the DNS server have a forwarder defined? What is its forwarder?

Well I dont believe DNS is running on the box as it shouldnt be if it
is. I am speaking of the DNS Client in the "Services". The description
of that is Resolves and caches Domain Name System (DNS) names.

Sorry just got handed this machine 3 weeks ago and not too familiar with
it.

OK the DNS client is not a DNS server, but the DNS client holds the system's
DNS cache and loads and names listed in the Hosts file. Restarting the DNS
client does the same as running ipconfig /flushdns.

Are you sure this server does not have the DNS server service running?
If it is a Domain Controller in an Active Directory domain you must have a
local DNS server somewhere. You didn't say whether you have a domain or not
99% of the questions here are related to DNS when used with Active
Directory, excuse my confusion.

That being said, If you are using Exchange 2000 then you need Active
Directory which requires DNS and all local machines must point to this DNS
server.
I can probably help you but I need as much information as possible to help
you diagnose the problem. If you have Exchange I need to know what version.
I need to know if you have Active Directory and its domain name.
Post an ipconfig /all
If using Exchange have you defined an external DNS server for it and what
DNS it is using.

If you think you are not familiar with the machine, remember I can't see its
monitor so you will need to give me as much as you know and what you don't
know see if you can talk to someone more familiar with it that does. :-)
