This is Windows 2000 and it has been installed with no problem but when it
comes to update this error occures.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it still doesn't work. I have read
that if you uninstalling and then reinstall it will not update however it did
not update in the first place.

I am receiving Error 0x80040154 Class not registered...What does this mean?

Thanks.

That's terrific--next question is which one fixed it. Was the Windows
Installer 3.1 among the ones you installed?

Hi Bill,

You have posted multiple messages (along with others) related to the
0x80040154 error mesage. I am getting the same message also. I have tried
several things that were recommended in posting and am stil getting same
message.

Please confirm -- are you receiving this error message on Win2000 SP4? If
so, please send me your email address (send to (e-mail address removed)) - I
had sent note to Microsoft concerning problem and had technical person
respond but based on my schedule, I can't do what is requested in a timely
manner.

If you are having the same problem, perhaps you can pick up the problem
working with Microsoft and help a lot of people.

Thanks

Bill

I am getting the same problem on my 2000 Pro SP4 install. I cannot use
windows update so I downloaded the GDI+ and the installer. Neither fixed my
issue.

I am having this same issue on my Windows2000 SP4 Pro install. I cannot use
Windows update due to corporate policy. I installed Installer 3.1
(reinstalled actually) and downloaded/installed the GDI+ detection software.
Still not working. Anyone?

This is not one I've seen first hand--I'm just following it in the group
here, I'm afraid.

I still suspect either the Windows Installer 3.1, or some com+ related
glitch--something disabled, perhaps...

In relation to Windows Update, this error message suggests the following:
--------
Verify that the following files are present and registered properly. Also
make sure that these files are not marked as read-only or system.
? %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
? %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
? %windir%\system32\wuaueng1.dll
? %windir%\system32\wuauserv.dll
? %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
? %windir%\system32\wups.dll
? %windir%\system32\wuweb.dll
? %windir%\system32\iuengine.dll
--------

So--drop to a cmd prompt and type:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll

for example, for the first one on that list.

You can make this go faster by cding to the \windows\system32 (or
winnt\system32) directory, then you don't need to type all the path stuff.

Two of those--the last one, and wuauserv.dll gave me error messages stating
that they cannot be registered, I think that is normal.

Corporate policy is what is preventing the update. Find out whether WSUS is
available on your network. Ask whether it would be possible for the new
class of updates for Windows Defender signature updates to be approved by
the administrator.

Okay there are 4 that are not on my system. Is there a KB article number on
that update so I might be able to download it without using windows update?

Hmm--I'm not at all sure what the best fix is--I'm thinking of SFC /scannow
and your original OS CD, but maybe there's something better.

There's a public WindowsUpdate support newsgroup that might be a better
resource.

I'm a little pressed for time today--I won't be able to get back to these
groups until after dinner at the earliest--I'll see if I can get any better
ideas in the interim.

You might try re-applying Service Pack 2 on your machine. That may replace
the stuff that is missing.

That should be reasonably safe--it won't for example, replace files that
have been updated by security patches that have come out since.
