I have two cd drives one a burner (regular rw/r burner/reader and one
just a normal rom reader) drives D and E. For a while now they have
not been working properly (they’ve always worked fine) maybe I got a
virus or something. I use XP. The details:

When I shut down my PC completly then reactivate the lights in the
drives will flash (I know they’re plugged in) then when the BIOS comes
up it will scan for them and 1/3 times they will work other times the
lights go blank and it says none. When I restart my computer just the
restart they never work.

I’ve been able to get them working by starting it then putting it into
standby and turning it back on then they seem to work only for a while
though and I get errors. I really am at a loss and have no idea what
happened. After a while it’s like they just shut down, most times
they never activate (or fully activate it seems).

Sorry I am not very computer literate. I would really appreciate some
help :)

It could be any of several things, corrupted drivers in
Windows, the BIOS could be in error, perhaps from a weak
battery, the hard drive could be failing, allowing random
changes in settings.
You have to troubleshoot problems one step at a time, start
with the BIOS; replace the CMOS battery (see the motherboard
manual/computer handbook for instructions) and be sure that
the BIOS is set properly to enable the CDROM and RW drives.
Use the Device Manager to check for problems and update
drivers as required.
Check for errors on the hard drive using chkdsk.
It is also possible that the IDE cable is loose or has some
corrosion, reseat the cable at both ends. If the CDs are
using 40 wire/40 pin connectors, try an 80 wire/40 pin
cable.
