I have a customer who is getting the error described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;293842.

According to the MSKB 293842, this error occurs under
severe load, and was fixed in Windows 2000 SP3. Well, the
customer has Windows 2000 SP4, and the system is not all
that heavily loaded, but they still get the error. It's
intermittent, but frequent.

The situation is that a process on the server needs to
write files to a share on a particular workstation. It's
a workgroup network, and a logon has been created on the
workstation that has the same UID and PW as the "runas"
logon on the server.

Server is Win2K Server SP4. Workstation is Win2K Pro SP3.

Anyone have any ideas on where to go next?

Thanks!

how about you check out the eventvwr for system events.

start ->run-> eventvwr

You will probably find some hw that might be f'd up.

In our compaq servers, this error happens when we have disk go bad.

Thanks, I'll add that to the list of things for the
customer to check. (I'll assume the error is more likely
on the workstation, where the physical drive is located,
and not on the server, where the error message appears.)

If the error appears on the server, it is more than likely the server, not
the client pc.

Somebody who read my original post has the w32.Swen.A@mm
virus. I got three copies in very rapid succession
shortly after posting the message.

Please clean your machines.

Thanks!

Well, I don't see anything suspicious in the server's
event logs, and I can't view the event logs on the client.

The error occurs when the server is trying to write to a
shared folder on the client's hard drive.

Well, I know it's not me.

However, swen, happens to cull address from website cache as well address
books.

It could be from someone here, or from someone else that has your address,
unfortunately, you'll probably never find out who it was. I've looked at
headers of messages I've rec'd but to no avail.

It's sends rather convincing email though that appears to be from MS.

How come you can't check the client pc?

If you are the same network you can do the following to check the event logs
remotely

- right click my computer -> manage ->right click computer manage local ->
select remote computer -> put in the name and connect to it and read it's
event logs.

Shot in the dark,

And I've seen it several times, so I know it's possible.

First off, if you see the error box on the server you should be seeing an
entry in the event log system section.

PST's are very strange in their design and structure, I've had users try and
copy a 1GB PST to the file server, it fails with a Delayed Write Failed
error.

the difference between this and your scenario is the fact that you say you
have nothing in the event viewer. (which I find odd...if you generate the
dialog box, event viewer is almost ALWAYS aware)

So while 95% of the time I'd say this is a hardware failure in progress,
I've had and can recreate this via software copy from a client on a regular
basis.

That being said.. you're really NOT supposed to copy 1GB PSTs via network :)

Diane,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try again in the event logs.

What we're saving is ~ 500 KB TIFF file. Shouldn't be a
problem, but evidently it is.

Temporary problem. I don't have admin privileges on the
client PC, and the regular IT guy at the customer site is
on vacation.

I'll get there!
