When I try to reboot my Windows XP home edition I get an error screen which
says there is an unmountable_boot_volumn. I am allowed to go to the F8 menu
to safe boot before the error screen shows up but no matter what I tell it
(i.e. start windows normally, or safe boot, or safe boot with prompt) after
that the error screen appears giving me the message above and then the steps
to take (turn off computer and then on again and then remove any unstable
files etc.) but it won't let me boot to perform any of the steps. I am able
to access the bios screen but I don't know what to tell it when I get there.
I do the F10 but before it is allowed to go there to tell it to restore or
whatever I see that screen for a moment and then the error window pops up and
everything is locked again. I have to turn the computer off and then on
again only to replay what I just did.

Does anyone know how to get rid of that error window?

Install xp cd,boot to xp cd (set BIOS for this if needed,1st boot device or
similiar),
at xp cd boot menu, press r For recovery, select 1 For C: Press enter key for
password,type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru type:EXIT Let xp start..Remove cd

Thank you so much, Andrew. I did exactly what you said and it fixed my
computer. I know you know how much trouble you've saved me. Words can not
express my gratitude. Sincerely.
