Hey all,

my slave HDD died and I tried to boot it up into safe mode to check
something out.. well it crashed halfway through and now I'm getting "Error
while loading Operating System" when I try and boot up XP.

Luckily I have an old HDD with win 2k on it (which I'm using now) and I
connected my XP HDD as the slave so I still have access to all my school
work.

I've seen a couple postings about booting into recovery mode and then using
fixmbr to fix the XP probs, is this the correct course of action or should I
be doing something else.

thanks,

Eric

Eric -
If your hard drive "died", or seems to be in the process of doing so, you
may just want to copy all of your important information off of it and buy a
new drive. There's no command you can run that will fix a drive that is
physically failing.

Otherwise, you may want to try a repair installation of Windows XP. Boot to
the XP CD and ignore the first screen that asks if you want to repair -
press enter to get past that. Setup will scan for installed copies of
Windows, and it should detect your damaged XP installation. Select that
from the list, and Setup will install Windows over top of itself. This will
not erase your data, but you will have to reinstall any hotfixes or service
packs you may have originally installed.

Good luck!
