Hello all,
we have two Windows 2000 Advanced servers as domain
controller and additional domain controller. now i want to
create a new domain. so i am trying to depromote the
additional domain controller and make it as a seperate
domain controller for other domain.
i used "dcpromo" to depromote domain controller. but
i am getting the following error.

The operation failed.

The directory service failed to replicate off changes
made locally.

"The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS
lookup failure"

in the additional domain controller i gave the prefered
DNS entry as the IP of domain controller.

can you please suggest in this.

Thanks in advance.
Mohan Vamsi.

Mohan,

Please make sure that the DNS is running on the Domain
Controller and that Domain Controller running the DNS is
not the one you are planning to demote. Make sure that the
DDNS Update is enabled if and only if the DNS Server is
not an AD INtegrated one.

Do one thing. IN the machine you are trying to demote type
nslookup in the cmd prompt and enter the domain name and
hit Enter. You should see two names, i.e of two domain
controllers. If not then the DNS Server is not updating
itself with all the AD Information.

Please go through properly the Win2K AD Implementation
guide for further information.

Hope this helps,
Thanks and REgards
