I am connecting to a groupwise 6.5 backend, and can send a new message, and
recieve messages just fine, but when I try and reply, or forward a message I
get the following error message. "The messaging interface has returned an
unkown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook." I have uninstalled
and reinstalled Office 2k3, and run the repair utility, but I still get this
error. Desktop machines are running xppro, and I have had this error on
multiple machines. I am assuming it has something to do with the Groupwise
backend, but older versions of Outlook are working just fine.

The new version of outlook installs a different windows messaging component,
and it looks like it won't work on the GroupWise backend w/o rewriting the
API.

Error when trying to reply or forward in Outlook 2003 [RESOLVED]

Yayyayayyayyaa! Finally solved! :D
(Messaging Interface has returned an unknown error)

My environment:
  • Windows XP Pro SP2
  • Microsoft Outlook 2003
  • Groupwise 7 Connector
Problem description:
When replying to email in Microsoft Outlook 2003 using Groupwise 7 Connector, you receive the error "Messaging Interface has returned an unknown error). All other functionality works correctly.

The problem seems to be with Office 2003 SP3.

Solution:
Check your version of MS Outlook. Ensure that it is not Outlook SP3. If so, then you must uninstall the whole of Office 2003 and install an earlier version (ie. Office 2003 first release). Set your windows update to never download Office SP3.

Caveat: Obviously by not installing SP3 your system may be vulnerable from a security perspective.

Happy emailing,
