When I click on a data file in the folder list and select
Close, I get the following error:
"The operation failed. An ojbect could not be found."

The data file in question no longer exists. I just want
it to disappear from Outlook.

A few facts:
MS Office Outlook 2003 (11.5608.5606) "Basic Edition"
Window XP home edition
I was messing around with the data files under local
settings in an attempt to move a profile from another
computer. Now I just have one data file. It can be view
correctly. It is the intermediate attempts I am trying to
get rid of.

Any thoughts?

I had the same problem when I was trying to figure out how to make the .pst-files roam.
The only way I could find to get rid of this "phantom-file" was to erase the profile ("Start -> Control Panel -> Mail -> Show Profiles -> Remove").
This will clear Outlooks memory of having that file, and any other files too.
Then you can of course go into "Start -> Control Panel -> Mail -> Data Files" as usual to "Add" back the files that you wanted to still have in the list.

Hope it works out...
