When I click a link that is supposed to open Outlook to send an email, I
get the error "Could not perform this operation because the default mail
client is not properly installed". I am using MS Outlook 2002 SP3 and IE7.
What do I need to do next?

Hi,
Is Outlook the default e-mail program in Internet Options> Programs and
Control Panel> Add or remove programs> Set program access and defaults?

If so, try the Default Mail Utility at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/permail.htm
(near the bottom of the page.) I would export (backup) the registry or
create a System Restore point before making the change so that the change
can be easily undone if necessary.

Hope this helps,

OK, now I'm officially nervous. When in my copy of IE 7, I go to tools>
internet options there is only a "program tab" not programs and control
panel and all the rest. On my programs tab there is a place to change
the default mail client. Is this the correct place? If so, then
Outlook is set as the default. If I am OK so far, I will continue with
the rest.

Sorry. I lost touch with this thread *and* could have been clearer.

Try this...
Is Outlook the default e-mail program in Internet Options> Programs
and
Start> Settings> Control Panel> Add or remove programs> Set program access
and defaults?

But, Outlook probably is the default and Ramesh's page at
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/permail.htm should help.

The Ramesh thing didn't solve the problem, but I did. I installed
Firefox and Outlook starts from a link now. It solved another problem
for me also.

Thanks for your time.

JC

I also tried the Ramesh fix but i got the error that Registry Editor could
not set security in the key currently selected or some of it's subkeys." I
tried all of them

It is really a shame that the only fix to this is intalling firefox. It is
annoying that installing IE7 messed up the registry and the didn't carry
through with the installation of the mail client.

There should be a patch to fix this.

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.
