Error when sending message

Hi,
Hi,

Sorry to be sending yet another question about sending emails but I've been
working on this problem for 2 weeks with no luck.

This is the error message I've been receiving:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test w/o AV', Account:
'mail.illinoisancestors.org', Server: 'mail.illinoisancestors.org', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 2626, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number:
0x800CCC0E

My SMTP is set to 2626 and this was working for years and then it suddenly
didn't work anymore. I can receive emails but can't send them out anymore.

I also changed the SMTP to 25 and that didn't work either. I then
uninstalled my anti-virus program (Avast) and didn't include the email shield
when I re-installed it...and that didn't help either.

I would deeply appreciate any help or suggestions!

thank you so much,
manderly

P.S. - Don't I still need to have my emails scanned for viruses in some way?
Sorry for the silly question...

Have you checked with the email account provider?
Perhaps they have changed something.

These days, port 25 connections are often blocked at boundaries between
one internet provider and the next, to make it more difficult to send email
spam. Other ports are occasionally blocked as well - ask your internet
provider for details on just what ports they're blocking, and whether they
count that email provider as within their boundaries. There's no need to
apply a similar block to the other ports (such as 110) used for incoming
mail, since such ports normally can't be used to send any email at all.

Also, that email server appears to be related to this web site:

http://www.illinoisancestors.org/

Therefore, I suggest exploring that web site to see if it offers any
information
about email problems at their end, and any alternate way of contacting them
that doesn't require a direct connection to their email server.

Email viruses generally have to get out of the email into another file
before
they can cause any problems. Therefore, scanning the email is usually
just a way to detect them faster than scanning any other files the email
program creates.

I was able to establish contact with that server on port 25 but not on port 2626.
Apparently your host for mail.illinoisancestors.org no longer supprts port 2626.
Call them to find out if they support any SMTP port other than 25.
I also tried ports 587 and 2525 without any response.

In a worst case scenario you would have to substitute the SMTP server
belonging to your ISP.

Verizon has no control over mail.illinoisancestors.org.
Did you call the domain host for illinoisancestors.org and ask them
if they still support an SMTP port other than 25?

Verizon's mail server is a little tricky to use because they have four
different mail systems. Do you already have a Verizon mail account
set up in Windows Mail? If so, you can copy its SMTP settings to your
mail.illinoisancestors.org account. Let's assume the correct Verizon
mail server for you is outgoing.verizon.net. Here are the steps to take:

1. In Windows Mail go to Tools, Accounts, select your illinoisancesters.org
mail account, click Properties, Servers. Change the name of the outgoing
(SMTP) server to outgoing.verizon.net. Do not change the incoming server.
Also, make sure that "My server requires authentication" is checked.
Click the adjacent "Settings" button. Select "Log on using"
then enter your Verizon username and the associated the password.

2. Go to the Advanced tab and change the port number for the outgoing
(SMTP) server to 25. Click OK. Try sending.

Note: It is customary here when replying to quote the message you're
replying to.

Thank you for your help!

I called Verizon, my ISP, and they couldn't help me...

You mentioned substituting my SMTP server...how do I do that?

many thanks...

Hi Gary,

I called my hosting company and they provided me with another SMTP port.

Thank you for suggesting that I call them. It worked!

many thanks,
