Office 2K on WinXP Pro. Plenty of memory and disk space. PST file is on
server. Clicking on any icon, including the one in the Office folder brings
up the splash screen, and then the "sorry about that, wanna send a message?"
box comes up. Managed to start Outlook using the 'run' > outlook /safe
command. At least the client's got access to her mail now. I've
uninstalled, and repaired. Renamed files, as outlined in a couple of
places, downloaded updates, and service packs. I've run the anti virus, and
Googled till I'm gaga. I've found the problem mentioned several places, but
either one of the other fixes worked for them, or they were never answered.
I spent several hours on this, and still no answer. Please, has anyone got
any ideas? TIA PaulG

The PST is on the exchange server. Can it still be too big? I told her
anyway to start deleting stuff.

Is the PST file too big? ie. 2GB?

my experience is mostly with Outlook97 on Win95 & Win2K
and Outlook2000 on Win2K & WinXP. Funny things happen
when your primary PST file exceeds 1GB. I noticed
various "strange" errors as the size of my primary PST
file exceeded 1GB. I never went much above 1GB because of
erratic behavior.

Like anyone with a 1GB PST file, I am a message packrat.
Deleting content is a good idea, but is not the path I
choose. My solution was NOT to delete content, but rather
to partition the content in some meaningful way and then
move it to multiple PST files (you can have multiple PST
files "open" during a session -- I often run with 6 to 8
PST files concurrently). This not only eliminated all the
funny errors, but also improved: session startup speed;
searches and sorts; and, file compression (can take hours
for a 1GB file). It also had two other great benefits:
1. really improved my management of Outlook content
2. I can run multiple OutLook profiles that access common
PST files. I have a half dozen profiles, each for a
different server (one MS exchange server and several web-
based servers). I have tailored the "services" for each
profile. Some services are attached to multiple profiles.

The only drawback is that content is now in multiple files
instead of (just) multiple folders.

Hope this helps
