Error when I try to insert a wmv in PPT2002

When I attempt to insert a wmv file into a powerpoint slide (powerpoint
2002 running on win2kpro sp4), I receive an error "the file is an
invalid format or not a proper quicktime file" (or similar, I don't have
the exact wording of the message in front of me). The file plays fine
in WMP, but will not open in mplay32. Quicktime is not installed on
this system (so the error message is kinda weird to me). The system had
real one player installed, which I uninstalled, but didn't help. I
realize that this must be a codec issue. How do I find out what codec I
need (again, this is a .wmv file) and install it so this will work?

Any help is appreciated.

First, I would carefully check to ensure that the MCI settings have not been
modified by Real One (they usually are), which could account for your
problem. Uninstalling Real One doesn't restore them. Go to
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm and pay
particular attention to the third section. Lisitings of the MCI settings
are provided and should be compared word for word with your own.
