Error updating definitions

When I click on "Check for new definitions" in Defender, I get the following
error:

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80244016"

Any thoughts?

Use Ewido or Webroot Spy Sweeper. They are dependable, update easily and are
certainly more effective and less buggy than "Defender". :)
 
I'm familiar with both of those products, as well as a host of others. I'm
not looking for a production product. I'm trying to beta-test defender,
since it's in beta. This is the correct news group for that, right?

You are not alone. I have been having problems with the Windows Defender
for a couple weeks now. I swear I uninstalled it a few times, but it keeps
reappearing. I have got the same error message as you when I update the
program and other errors telling me it is already up to date which I know it
isn't, because I get that alert message from the Windows Defender, it's a
pain in the neck and I agree with the one poster Ewido is really good (even
the free version).
