Hopefully you are still monitoring this thread. I think I need to elaborate
on this issue. I posted the following response to a post I had ongoing since
April, 2008.
---
What we've determined after an extensive investigation using a number of
tools, including filemon, processmon, tcpview, etc, that it's CA
antivirus software causing the problem. One huge indicator was when we
disable it, PowerPoint saving to a network share works (whether a mapped
drive, redirected My Docs, or a simple UNC). Start the CA services, and back
to square one.
The basis behind it is whenever an image is embedded into a Power Point
slide, it would not save across the network, but will locally. We've
worked with CA Tech Support to come up with a solution, but they've somewhat
dragged their feet with it for quite some time. We didn't think their tech
support department really understood the problem. After awhile, we just gave
up to the point that we had to do something, and the something was to find
another vendor. Of course with a 5000 user seat license, they didn't like
that and made amends. I must admit, and I know this is a public forum and
have never provided negative comments, but their tech support department did
not respond to assistance as one would expect as other companies do. Even
Microsoft PSS tech support engineers, as well as Cisco, and a number of
other companies, will give you a direct phone number and email address to
get a hold of them. CA support was difficult to get a hold of because they
never gave us a direct phone number or email address to contact the owner of
the support ticket, difficult to schedule tasks and tests, etc. We were
given a general email address and told the subject line will route the
ticket. Well, we never got the same tech support person. That made it
difficult because we found ourselve repeating the story and what was done.
After months of working with them, and us complaining and the threat of
going to something else, they came up with a possible solution, a
replacement DLL file. We have yet to test it because it needs to replace a
current file on the client side and server side. Problem is we can't just
replace a file on a file server that is being accessed by 1000's of users,
even if it doesn't require a restart, especially being a global company. It
must be done offline, such as a Sunday evening, and scheduling it with a
user that is experiencing the problem. And yes, it was difficult for us to
reproduce because of the PPT presentations the users have and the size and
nature and type of image files they are using.
Anyway, that's where we're at. And sorry, no I can't give it away, sorry. If
you are also using CA AV and experiencing this issue, I would suggest to
contact their support department.
Let me know how you made out with this issue, that is if you've resolved it
by now.
Thank you,
Ace
