Error Running ADPREP

In a test world I have a single domain controller running Windows 2003,
no service pack. I have added a standalone W2k3 SP2 server which I wish
to make a second dc. I extracted, but did not install, sp2 onto the
original dc and ran adprep /forestprep. It then returns an error with
the correct path of the extracted files and says it could not locate
dcpromo.cs_. After searching, I did not find any such file.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

to create another DC in an existing domain you need to run DCPROMO on
the stand alone of member server

ADPREP is for something else, like for example upgrading your AD to a
newer schema version

Exactly! I cannot run dcpromo until I run adprep. The two os's are at
different levels. The problem is I can't run adprep.

then you are probably trying to promote a W2K3 R2 SP2 DC..... R2 is the key
word here.

use ADPREP from the second disk of the R2 distribution set. That will
upgrade your schema version from 30 to 31. the use DCPROMO to promote the DC
