Error Reporting "stops responding" along with IE6

IE started having a problems 2 nights ago. It would "stop responding" and
the Error Reporting window opens. When the error report completed I would
click on Close and BOTH would close. Now tonight BOTH "stop responding."

I get the Error Reporting window which ALSO locks up and "stops responding."
What can the problem be now?

Norton, Spy-bot and AdAware find nothing. All are up to date.

When you click the Internet Explorer icon, window may flash a second and quits. Or, it may show an Error-Reporting dialog. This may be due to a malware Browser Helper Object which causes Internet Explorer process to terminate. If you see the Error-Reporting dialog, click "to see what data this report contains" and identify the Module Name causing this error. In most cases, it may be the spyware DLL. Therefore, reinstalling Internet Explorer [in case of a spyware DLL] may not help.

To test with: Disable third-party browser extensions in Internet
Explorer
1. Click Start, Run, and type inetcpl.cpl. [or control inetcpl.cpl]
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.
4. Restart Internet Explorer.

## When the "Error Reporting" window sends the information and closes
that's it. THERE IS NO REPORT. It closes and gives me no choices to see
any problems it may have found. And now it doesn't seem to work at all.
Note: It never did give me a *choice* to see what the problem may be since I
have this PC. How do I find and remove the parasite when I have no access
to the Error Reporting Window's findings? There is no "MORE INFORMATION"
link there to click on. Without THAT information I can't see how I can
proceed. How is this feature turned on in the "Error Reporting" window?
There are no tabs or buttons on that window.

When I went through the below routine with the HP tech it ended up costing
us almost $300 because the PC never did reboot afterward. The XP CDs did
not work to boot it (it didn't look at the drives) and we couldn't get to do
a system recovery or "anything" else. Evidently some XP-Home systems can't
boot when these things are clearned from the General Tab.

1.. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click
OK.
2.. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear
the Process System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items
check boxes. You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.
3.. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services
check box, and then click Disable All.
4.. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
5.. After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms are still
present.

Hi F.S.,
I am sorry your p.c. is sick again.
It's been a few weeks since the last time we at this N.G. have heard from
you.
There is a small freebe download program from www.definitivesolutions.com,
that is called 'BHO Daemon' that is usefull in showing what BHO's are
installed on your p.c..
It is up to you to decide good from bad.

| ---------------------------------------

Another site that can detect parasites just by logging on is
'and.doxdesk.com'.
Good to save as a favourite.

Thanks Rob. I will check this out and see what turns up. I don't know how
these things (if a new one is there) get on my PC because I have ZoneAlarm,
Norton, Spy-bot and AdAware and keep the last 3 updated. I never open
attachments and am careful what I download (then scan with Norton). I don't
visit porn or Warez sites..... I have all the critical updates from MS.
I'll let you know if anything "turns up".

BTW another odd problem that just started is the sounds on my PC keep
reverting to NONE. I'm the only user and every other day or so I have to go
to sounds,.... choose my saved "sounds".... then they're back to none
again - AAARGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Again - thanks!

My scenario is about the same but I use a different antivirus program and
firewall. Had a bit of spyware sneak its way onto the system. Relatively
new snippet as it required the most recent update from Spybot S&D to detect
and remove. Up until its removal, I had terrible time connecting to
websites. Once at a site, could move around within it just fine but
changing to a new site? Lag-City. Symptoms similar to a dns problem but
manual pings indicated otherwise. It's "nasty" out there!

All better for now,

How is spyware/hijackers etc. located when nothing can find it? I looked
at the site Rob recommended and didn't have a clue what it was about. It's
evidently "stuff" for techies.

I ran Belarc Advisor and it listed all the software installed on my PC but
that's little help in locating spyware or hi-jackers. How are they located
when Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot can't or doesn't find them?

Right now the problem is "LAG" as you mention. The constant errors stopped
after I dumped the temp, temp internet files, history, cookies and did a
defrag. A friend recommended I download and run "Pest Control" but that
didn't find anything either. I'll probably delete it since it doesn't look
like it's worth $39.00.

Whoops... correction. Wrong webpage/issue. I did download the BHOD and it
found 3 things. 2 belonged there and the 3rd was (Adobe reader) disabled.
None were spyware.

Just like viruses and worms, there is new malware created everyday.
The pros in this category keep on top of these things and regularly
update their programs. Antivirus programs need their virus definitions
updated to be most effective. The same goes for the antispyware
programs. Before running AdAware, Spybot S&D, BHO Demon or CWShredder
- check for updates. Install them. Then scan.

Recently I installed Spyware Blaster. It is another kind of protection
in this category. It sets "kill bits" in the registry blocking the
installation of this junk. If it doesn't get installed, it doesn't
have to be removed. Between Spyware Blaster and regular checks with
the other programs, you can expect a system to be reasonably clean and
trouble free.

** Someone sent me to a MS website I cannot now find, for a "patch" of some
kind for IE6. I downloaded it and it seems to have worked. I was sure I
saved it in my favorites but cannot locate it. It was in ref' to the
MSHTML.DLL that we cannot delete, move or rename. Do you know the patch or
fix I mean?

| Where are "Enable third-party browser extensions" to be found ?

F.S., Go to Control Panel/Internet Connections/Advanced. Down towards the
mid point of the lists
is the necessary tick box to be checked.

or the "event logs" ?

F.S., Go to Control Panel/Admin.Tools/Event Viewer/Application Log.

Hope this helps, F.S.
b.t.w., I really like your web page of long haired men pic's, there should
be more of us, reminded me of what mine was like a few years back before mid
life thinning stole the crown.
Your choice of music on the page is really good.
I must say please stay away from the Registry area, as your text book for
dummies wont help there, and you can come to grief quickly, if you delete or
change things that are not familar to you.

Why are you trying to replace an IE/XP version file with one from
Win98's version of Internet Explorer? Frankly, this sounds like more
trouble waiting to happen. XP and Win98 operate very differently.
There are often XP versions of files and Win98 versions that
accomodate those differences.

What is the article regarding mshtml.dll that you have referred to?

Do you have all current updates for XP and IE installed?

* Because the one we have MSHTML.DLL on this XP PC was constantly causing
errors and closing IE6. Surfing was becoming a nightmare.
We have an older MSHTML version we used to replace another bad MSHTML.DLL on
the other HP. (we have 3 PCs) That particular version was KNOWN to just
cause whatever was being typed to simply VANISH! And I mean VANISH! The
page would suddenly not be there and have to be retyped all over again. Do
you know how much time that wasted and how aggravating that was? So we
copied a *good* version from the oldest PC to a CD-R and then installed it
on the PC with the faulty version of the the MSHTML.DLL. PRESTO! No more
vanishing pages of text. :-) But to replace a DLL in W98 is a snap as I
said.

Frankly, this sounds like more

* But isn't IE6 the same software?
There are often XP versions of files and Win98 versions that

* The patch seemed to work as IE6 isn't causing endless errors - but I need
to save a copy in case I have to do a system restore again. I didn't save
the URL the person gave me for the IE6 patch/fix. I can't believe I didn't
save it!!!

* That's the problem Sharon - I didn't bookmark the MS site I got the patch
from.
Do you have all current updates for XP and IE installed?

* Yes, every one! But it appears that sfc isn't working right either. It's
a small window with a progress window and Cancel button. After it runs it
shuts off and disappears by itself and we have no way to know what it found,
what it did - nothing.

The program operates the same BUT there is a version for Win9x/ME and

constructed differently for the operating system they will be used

That is the normal behavior for SFC when it finds no discrepancies.
It is only when it finds mismatching file versions where the "good"
file is not available that SFC starts to ask for your OS media.
