then displays an error message asking me to close the application. It never
used to do this. Hope some can help. Here is the text of the error file

yes, it definitely used to work. Only new hardware I can think of is a new
wireless mouse. New software from time. I did install two different
software packages that are supposed to convert PowerPoint to DVDs. I only
have the trial versions. Didn't buy either one because they didn't work
very well. Could they be interfering with MovieMaker? Also Windows Live
Mail, but surely that can't be a problem.

That was a good suggestion, but now for some reason System Restore does not
work. I tried five or six different dates in both February and March and
each time got a message that System Restore could not restore to that date
and that no changes were made to my system. I've used SR many times in the
past without a problem. I also removed the PPT to DVD software, but that
made no difference. The only other thing I have done in the past month is
add a new printer. Perhaps that software is interfering with MovieMaker,
but given the alternative, I'd rather have my printer than MovieMaker. I do
have MovieMaker on my laptop (Vista) and it works fine there; just wish it
still worked on my desktop (XP).

Graham Hughes said:
I would start by using system restore back to the point before the
powerpoint to dvd apps, as these are the most likely to be causing the
problem.

Bob said:
yes, it definitely used to work. Only new hardware I can think of is a
new wireless mouse. New software from time. I did install two different
software packages that are supposed to convert PowerPoint to DVDs. I
only have the trial versions. Didn't buy either one because they didn't
work very well. Could they be interfering with MovieMaker? Also Windows
Live Mail, but surely that can't be a problem.

Graham Hughes said:
If it used to work and now doesn't it means something has changed on
your pc. Since it worked last, what have you done to the pc?
Added any hardware?
Added any software?
Added any updates?
Removed/unistalled anything?

When I try to use MovieMaker, the application opens for a few seconds
and then displays an error message asking me to close the application.
It never used to do this. Hope some can help. Here is the text of the
error file created:

That was a good suggestion, but now for some reason System Restore
does not work. I tried five or six different dates in both February
and March and each time got a message that System Restore could not
restore to that date and that no changes were made to my system. I've used
SR many times in the past without a problem. I also
removed the PPT to DVD software, but that made no difference. The
only other thing I have done in the past month is add a new printer.
Perhaps that software is interfering with MovieMaker, but given the
alternative, I'd rather have my printer than MovieMaker. I do have
MovieMaker on my laptop (Vista) and it works fine there; just wish it
still worked on my desktop (XP).
===================================
The message you are receiving from System
Restore usually indicates that software on your
system (possibly a Virus Scanner) is interferring.

The solution is to do the System Restore from
Safe Mode.

Thanks for the suggestion, but even in Safe Mode, System Restore could not
restore to an earlier date. Something must be going on, but I'm not sure
what.

I guess that wasn't the solution after all.

I do have SP2 and MM v. 2.1. MM does open and stays up for about 5 seconds
before giving me the error message to close. It used to work just fine.
When it opens, it still has the last video I made.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

(927177) How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177/en-us

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )
===

Uninstalling IE7 seems to have worked! I use Firefox in any case. I'm
puzzled by your other suggestion, however. When I click on Tools/Options, I
do not have a compatibility tab. Just General and Advanced tabs. Maybe I
don't have the most recent version. When I look on the help tab/about in
one place it says version 5.1; in another place version 2.0.3312.0. But it
also says I have SP2. In any case MM now works. I'll just have to make
sure that Windows automatic update doesn't reinstall IE7. Thanks for the
help.

Good...at least we have made progress.

5.1 is your Windows XP SP2 Version...
2.0.3312.0 is your Movie Maker version...
so if you want version 2.1... the following
article may be worth a look.

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

Well here's what I find strange. When I open MM the help/about info says I
have version 2.03312.0. But when I go to Program Files/Movie Maker, all the
icons say 2.1.4026.0. How can that be?

Sounds like a partial install...the info
I posted for you is supposed to correct
that.

Good luck.

So did my last post, as I looked at the error message which said MM

Hi Graham,

Maybe Bob will give it a try and
let us know if it worked for him.

I actually tried a couple of times without success, but I must have missed
something. So I just tried again. I copied new versions from my i386
folder (I don't have a dllcache folder). I had to rename them because they
had .dl_ extensions. And now finally, when I open MM it says version
2.0.3312.0! So I guess everything is OK. Perhaps I should reinstall IE7
and see if it messes it up again. Thanks for the help.

it should be version 2.1.4026.0

Amazing indeed, especially all the files in my MM folder are marked
2.1.4026.0, except for WMMFILT.DLL and WMMRES.DLL, which have no version
number at all listed. And to make matters even more confusing, as soon as I
re-installed IE7, MovieMaker (version 2.0.3312.0) crashed again. Got the
"must close" error message. The instruction list also shows how to
manually register version 2.1. I didn't do that; wasn't sure whether that
was a continuation or an alternative to the installation instructions.
