Error popup when searching for files or folders

I am getting an error message when I attempt to use the search function
from an explorer window or the start menu. It is very similar to the problem
described in KB900004, but I don't have the Win2K resource kit or the
rkadmin.dll
file. Curiously, the "Search Results" window is operational despite the
error popup,
and will do a search if I request it. Only when I close the error popup
does my
screen go blank for a moment, then return.

This is recent behavior. I was working around it for a while by doing a
system
restore back to a point before it started, but it keeps coming back. I am
about
to have the IT guys here wipe my C drive and reload XP, but I thought I should
try here before I drop the big one.
 
Once again, I answer my own question (this NG used to be better!). My
problem was McAfee. Un-registering a couple of DLLs made my crashes go away.
There is a KB on it, but it's hard to find. Advice to everyone: use your OCA
(Windows error reporting)!!! When you send your info to Microsoft, you will
be rewarded with links that have a good chance of pointing you to a solution
to your problem.
 
Having the same problem with a couple of PC's.

Could you let me know what the KB number is for this problem.
