I have been using NTbackup on several servers for months without problems.
Suddenly on several of them, the backup will not complete, no matter how
many times you attempt to run it. It gets nearly to the end and then
produces this error: "Error on a request to write data to the media. Error
reported: unknown error".

I saw a KB article (817688) that refers to this exact error, but it says
that the problem occurrs only on Server 2000. All of mine are Server 2000
SP3. Could a hotfix from Windows Update have caused this? Please help!

Thanks,
Mary

I would try returning the the tapes to the free media pool or preparing them
again.
After you apply the fix, you will want to return the media that the error
occurred on to a free media pool. To configure the media to automatically
return to a free media pool, follow these steps:
1.. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2.. Expand Storage
3.. Expand Removable Storage.
4.. Expand Media Pools.
5.. Right-click the media pool that you want, and then click Properties.
6.. On the General tab, click to select the Return media to Free media
pool check box.
If you do not click to select the Return media to Free media pool check box,
you must manually move the tapes or the disks in this program media pool to
a free media pool when they are no longer needed. After you perform this
action, another program can use those tapes or disks.

You have win2k and we are now on sp4, you may want to install sp 4 also.

Craig,

Thanks for the info, but I guess I should have mentioned that I'm backing up
to hard disk. Maybe going to SP4 will help.

Thanks again,
Mary

Mary..Check the event logs for errors and your disk space also...
Is this a Fat32 disk? There is a 4GB limit here I think. Ntbackup will at
times give out a error message that is a little off center.

Ray,

Thanks for the reply. These are NTFS hard drive arrays with approx. 80 gb
free. There's no error message in the event logs at all.

Thanks,
Mary

Interesting...

The KB mentioned at the bottom should be specific to tape devices...
This is a Windows 2000 server correct?
