I am online with Verizon DSL, and I have no problems getting online or going
to any web pages when I am online, but when I try to do certain things, I get
messages saying I am not connected to the internet. Examples: When I try to
download my Norton Antivirus, I get a message saying "Error occured
communicating with server, Please ensure you have an active internet
connection." When I tried to install an upgrade to my DSL, I got a message
saying "Can't find server, DNS error". i was able to download and install
MSN Messenger 7.5, but when I go to sign in, I get a message saying "Unable
to sign in, Your default gateway appears to be offline". Anyways, you get the
point. There are a lot of other things, and it's never the exact same error
message, but they all say I am not connected to the internet when I am!!!
Please help!! I spent over an hour on the phone w/ Verizon twice trying to
resolve this problem and they could not do it!!!

Hello buttercup,
If you are using Windows XP with SP2, it could be that Norton is
conflicting with the Windows Firewall. When you say you are trying to
download your Norton AV do you mean you are downloading it from the Internet
or installing it from a CD or just trying to update it? If your AV is
conflicting with thw w/firewall this could cause your connection to go on and
off although the user is unaware of it.
If you are using XP here are a couple of things you can try.
First if you have the Norton AV CD, uninstall the program then
reinstall it via the CD. During the install Norton will ask if you want to
turn off Windows Firewall.
Click yes. then after the install is complete verfiy that W/firewall is
indeed off.
To do this click>start>control panel>security center>windows firewall. In
the firewall window check to see that the off button at the bottom is
checked.
Also, you should check all cables to make sure they are tight and then
have windows check for and fix any problems with your local area connection.
To do this, click, start> control panel>network & Internet
connections>network connections> in the window right click, local area
connections, in the drop down box click, repair.
If windows can't find any problems and all your cables are tight call
your ISP back and have them explain how to use IP config. also buy a good
spyware program and run it jsut to be safe.
I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you,
Ron J, NCIE

I've tried all that. Guess I'm probably gonna have to pay someone a fortune
to come look at it! Thanks for the reply though!!!
