Error ......object has been deleted

I created a new contact list and used it to do a mailmerge. I then updated
the list and tried to export it to do another mailmerge but it threw up an
error, so I deleted the previous export file and it then worked fine.
However, when I now try open the list it throws up the error "the operation
cannot be performed because the object has been deleted" and then
automatically closes Outlook and then opens it again. I deleted the export
file but it had no effect. Any ideas? I need to use the list again.

You need to post more accurate information. "Contact List" means nothing to
us. Define what you mean by it and how you created it. The rest of your post
is equally unclear. Exporting of Contacts is never used or needed for a mail
merge. Why did you export?

I am using Outlook 2003 and I created a contacts file in the Contacts
folder. I exported the file to excel using the import/export routine and used
the list thus created to make a file of address labels using mail-merge in
Word. (If there is another way of creating labels from an outlook contacts
file I would be grateful if you could tell me how.) I later made changes in
the contacts file and needed to export it again, but it wouldn't allow me to
(I cannot remember the error message) so I deleted the previous exported file
and it then did allow me to do another export
so that I could update the labels. I can now still see the contacts file
but it says it has been deleted and I cannot access it any more. If I try to
access it, it forces Outlook to close and reopen.

I am not sure how else to describe what is happening.

Update - this contacts file has now deleted itself properly (this happened
when I deleted a different contacts file) so I will have to rebuild it. I've
also just realised that the error ".......object has been deleted" actually
first caused one of those requests to inform microsoft of the error and,
after I had asked it to inform microsoft, it then closed and reopened
outlook. I don't know if this adds anything.

Still don't understand why you're doing this. When you create a Contacts
Folder, that is the data source for your mail merge. You should not be
exporting to anything.

There's no such thing as a "contacts file" in Outlook. What did you delete?

realise you could use the contacts folder as a data source. I have just
tried to create a test merge and am unable to locate a .pat data file (which
seeems to be the outlook address book file ending) even searching the whole
of the C drive - where should it be?

Thank you both, Russ and Brian, for responding to me. I did not realise you
could use the contact folder directly as a data source. I have now tried to
use it but cannot find the .pat files anywhere on the system. Am I looking
for the wrong files? Do I have to set it up specially?

The Address Book in Outlook contains no data and has no file type. The
address book is a view of those of your Contacts folders that you have
enabled as address books and that contain contacts with electronic addresses
(i.e., email addresses and fax numbers).
