I've been going at this issue for almost two days now. I recently had to
reformat and reload my wife's laptop in the hope to resolve some issues she
was having with it. Everything reloads fine. She's running Windows XP Home
Edition Sp1. I launch Windows update configure it to use microsoft update.
Scan her computer using express and download and install BITS, Windows
Installer, Windows XP Update (KB898461), and the windows genuine validation
tool. Everything installs fine and then I reboot. I laucnh microsoft update
when the laptop reboots and select express. The scan takes about 15-30
minutes to complete and I get an error 0X8DDD009. I can't figure out whats
wrong. I've even reformated and reloaded the oS again and got the same error
at the same point. Please help.

One possibility - msi.dll may be the wrong verison.
Try downloading Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

You'll probably need SP2 as well
Windows XP Service Pack 2 - download (for single PCs also)

I tried installing the windows installer no luck still the same issue.
Should I try reregistering the files before downloading XP SP2? Also, the
download for SP2 won't let me downlod the single computer version other than
through windows update which is the whole issue. Is the multiple computer
version alright?

Yes, it is the same update except that it is in one package so it can
be put onto a CD or network server and used by multiple computers
without having to download again.

Good luck
