I've looked all through the device manager and can't find mention of a
NIC when there should be two. Any thoughts as to why they wouldn't
show?

Try uninstall the IP protocol. Restart, reinstall the IP protocol.

Thanks, I'm looking into how to do this. However, I *just* installed
win2k, so, I'm somewhat skeptical of that. Is there, perhaps, some way
to determine if this is a hardware problem? I installed both NIC's.

Resolution:

1. Re-install the network adaptor driver

1) Install the latest service pack for Windows 2000.

2) Remove the network adaptor driver from your computer.

3) Re-install the network adaptor driver.

2. Upgrade the latest driver for NIC.

3. If above two don't work, it may be the hardware issue. Try another slot or another NIC.

If the network cards don't show up in device manager, they're not installed.
See any unknown devices or devices incorrectly identified (a yellow
exclamation point)? Try taking the NICs out and installing them one at a
time. You should get the "found new hardware" wizard when you boot up. Also
try them in a different PCI slot. Make sure you have the correct drivers
handy.

Ah. I'm hesitant because I fear that I broke it the first time around,
but it's starting to look more and more that it's unavoidable that I
get back in there. Thanks for at least helping me to think about it by
laying out a specific procedure.

The "sister" of this computer has a wonky hard drive but, on the plus
side, I was able to ping. So, I know that the sister computer has a
good NIC which should help me figure this out, I hope.

Thanks, Kurt, problem solved! :)

The D-Link card *was* recognized as new hardware and it was a breeze
from there. I simply hadn't inserted the cards far enough, and here I
was thinking I'd broken the computer!. I haven't done the 3com card
yet, but I expect it to work fine.
