I received the message to download the upgrade and did. Upon restarting
windows, I received this error. I uninstalled, then re-installed three
times, no joy. I'm thinking your upgrad isn't fully baked yet. Is there a
work around? It looks like a lot of other folks are having similar problems.

An additional fact, when using the windows un-install, it doesn't delete the
folder or all of the files. Is there a download file to completley remove it
from the system?
It will not let me delete several of the files that un-delete left.

Hello Jim,

For the MSVCR80.DLL error, the fix is to delete MSASCui.exe.manifest, if
found.

Be sure to delete just the manifest file--not the actual executable itself.

Here are the steps as Steve Dodson posted them:

start -> run -> c:
Press Enter
Browse to c:\ program files
then Windows Defender
Left Click on MSASCui.exe.manifest and press the delete key on your keyboard
Select yes to delete the file.

Try using Ccleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
Note, When you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.
Note, in Options, Settings, Advanced, uncheck - Only delete files in Windows
folders older than 48 hours.
Note: uncheck Windows Defender in the applications.
Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.
Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.

Also you can try this:

Look for the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..

I hope that (this) post is helpful.

After extensive frustration, I discovered this thread with the solution that
worked:

"I've just found the answer, to my particular problem anyway, at a Windows
Defender forum :
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/newsgroups/ which
said 'if your getting the "missing MSVCR80.dll and can't download Defender ..
go to your 'Start' button and search for file "MSASCui.exe.manifest" and then
right click and 'delete' this file only. Then try to re-download Defender
again." I did this and Defender appears to be up and running again. "

I searched, it came up right away, I deleted it as suggested, then went to
add/remove programs, removed windows defender, went back and re-downloaded
the new beta... and voile' working flawlessly. Good luck!

I found that by logging on my "main" administrator account, I could delete
what the program removal was NOT deleting. I did that, than imported the
previous defendender program from one of my other computers, installed it,
now things are running fine. When I check for updates, it does not indicate
anything new. Neither of my other two computers indicated the need to
upgrade to a new version. I'm running XP Pro on this one and XP Home on the
others.

Hi Jim,

Always I said:
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistratºr.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an adm!n.

Be sure you have this readings in your systems:
WD v. 1.1.1347.0
Engine v. 1.1.1481.0
Signature v. 1.14.1525.2

Good luck
