first i must admit that this is my first computer and maybe vista wasn't the
best choice for me but it is what it is now. this has happened to me several
times now and i need to know if its something i'm doing wrong or if it's an
inherant vista problem. i have tried to use the 'contact us' direct link
from a couple of websites and have gotten the same message:
host 'imap' could not be found. please verify that you have entered the
server name correctly
account::windows mail server: 'imap' protocol: pop3 port 110
secure(ssl) no socket error 11001 error # ox800cccod
can anybody tell me what this means and PLEASE tell me in plain english,
i'm new to this whole computer thing and am not familiar with all the techno
jargon. i have read several of the comments on the newsboard hoping i might
figure this out on my own, but i just got more confused. i really could use
some help here, i'm nearly ready to give up on windows mail altogether and
stick with my verizon but i don't want to be restricted to 30 day storage. i
want to be able to keep my email messege as long as I choose to keep it.
thanks in advance to all who may step forward on this to help me out

Your server name appears wrong. normally bit would be something like

mail.mvps.org

or

imap,verizon.net

Go to their web page and read what you need to put in.

other's who use Verizon say it is just verizon.net (for IMAP)

But the protocol is also wrong. It is POP3.

So you need to find out the type of server (POP3/SMTP or IMAP) and then the
server name, and then if you need secure logon, if you need to logon to send
mail and if so does it need secure logon. Then just check that port are
standard for IMAP or POP3/SMTP (with or without secure login - different
ports).

I am having this problem also. My father's emails are not going out but he
is receiving them.

What doesn't make sense, I can send and receive with no problem all on the
same computer?

What error message does he get?

Call your ISP (Verizon?) or go to their online help page to get
the email account settings.

Incidentally, the error message you quoted appears to be paraphrased,
and is not accurate enough for a diagnosis. Next time, right-click on
the error message, select copy, then paste it into the message.
