I get

Character 1

Line 2 is actually <html>

How can this be?

The error message remains the same even when I push this
tag further down the page.

I am really confused. Can anyone help please?

Common script errors messages can be eliminated by Clicking:
Menu: Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab.
Check "Disable script debugging"
Uncheck "Display a notification about every script error"

You may also need the latest script engine.

Seems to be Ok. Did you fix it?

My suggestion would have been to try getting rid of the first line.
(the DOCTYPE comment).
