I downloaded 6.0 yesterday when I read the 5.5 was not
going to be supported after the end of the year.
After the installation a box came up that said Dlllnstall
in C:\windows\system\inetcpl.cpl did not intall. I
clicked OK. After the installation I found I found I
could not open control panel. When I checked the about
internet explorer I got another error 84 and it did not
show a version of IE that was just installed. Tried going
to System Restore and found another error 29 unspecified
error. This seems to indicate a script error. Downloaded
a fix from Microsoft on script and it did not good. When
I did the about IE I got another error 29. I am trying to
save this without loading it all back in but everything I
have tried in thelast 10 hours has not worked.
Running ME on a Toshiba Satelite 3000/s303.
Any help would be appreciated, nothing in the knowledge
base or FAQ's

No McAfee was not disabled at the time of installation. I
cannot get into add remove programs because I cannot get
to control panel.

I'd venture to say your problem is more OS-related than IE-related and IE6
in WinME is a very peculiar animal. Post to the WinME experts at this

I cannot access control panel

Can you Run... anything? Try

control appwiz.cpl

or

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

If that last command gets something like "entry point not found"
try it with IE5Maintenance instead.

In fact it's almost certainly a problem with AV interference with the IE
update.
The usual fix would be to reboot to Safe Mode, and run a Repair of IE - if
that doesn't work, try a Reinstall of IE while in Safe Mode (both from the
Add/Remove Programs wizard).
post back with your results, and we'll take it from there.

My problem is, I cannot get into add/remove programs as I
cannot get into Control Panel. When I went to inetcpl.cpl
I think I found that was a Control Panel file that would
not load. Without CP, how can I get into Add/Remove?

I did get into Add/Remove using control appwiz.cpl. I was
advised that IE6 could not be repaired and to reinstall.
I did that again. In reading the details, it appears
there are problems with about 12 dll files and it is
telling me that 5.5 of the file exists but the version
needs to be more than 6.0. If am getting down to grunt
time. I head out again in a couple of days with the
laptop and I am getting close to restoring to original and
losing all of my files.

Pa Bear, I did that yesterday. I was sure I had a problem
between the OS and IE. Thanks to you and Robert who
showed me how to get to Add/Removes,as a last resort I
went through the whole deal a few minutes ago. Using your
idea of an OS problem and going back to uinstall then
getting what Robert gave me to get back to add/remove I
finally got back to 5.5. Rebooted again and everything was
back to normal. I want to thank you folks you saved me a
whole lot of work. I have done lots of work but more was
instore. Thanks again. I really appreciate all the
efforts.

Still sounds as if you're still attempting to install with the AV enabled -
disable it completely before attempting the reinstall.
If that doesn't work, then you may have to remove IE6 using IEradicator
(www.litepc.com) then reinstall using a pre-downloaded version of IE - use
the instructions at http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html as a
guide.
