John Persico

I'm getting the following message when opening up Outlook 2000:

Unable to open the Outlook window. The server is not available.
Contact your administrator if this condition persists.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Have you checked what, if any, plug-ins have been installed into
Outlook?

Tools menu -> Options -> Other -> Advanced -> COM plug-ins and
Add-Ins

What happens when you start Outlook in its safe mode ("outlook.exe
/safe")?

I get the same message.
I'm unable to actually get into Outlook, so I can see what
plug-ins have been installed.

With Task Manager open and showing the Process tab panel with it sorted
and positioned in the list so you'll see any process starting with "o"
(oh), start Outlook. Do you ever see the outlook.exe process appear
(and then immediately disappear)? If so, Outlook is trying to load but
crashing. That's why I recommended trying to load Outlook in its safe
mode to eliminate the inclusion of any plug-ins that might be crashing.

If Outlook won't even start in its safe mode, open Word or other Office
component and go under its Help menu to use Detect and Repair.
Otherwise, an uninstall and reinstall might be the remaining choice. Be
sure to first copy your .pst file somewhere for backup.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office and my
Outlook still doesn't work! I have no idea what's going on.

Have you tried deleting an recreating your mail profile (Mail applet in
Control Panel)?

I went into the mail profile area under the control panel. I had
no profile. So, I created one. Now I get into Outlook fine, but
all my previous contact information is gone! Any idea what may
have happened to it?

The newly created mail profile selected a default information store
(.pst file). You'll have to find your old one and copy it atop the new
one, or change Outlook to point at your old .pst file (delete the newly
created .pst file, start Outlook, and point to your old .pst file when
prompted).

Thanks for all your help, and for listening to my moaning. I've
got Outlook back and running with all my contact information.
You were a great help.

Thanks for the feedback. It's not an ego thing. Whether a suggestion
worked or not helps us know if we should provide more suggestions, lets
us learn from our mistakes, and hone our helper skills. Glad it's
working for you now.
