Are these programs only looking to the hard drive at startup, or are
they looking for a removable disk as well? I have seen this behavior
with some application programs where the data files are always saved
directly to a removable disk (e.g. a 3.5 diskette).

I had to carefully check when and how this message appears.
1. The machine must be running for 3-4 hours
2.The problem occurs on start up of the programm
3. The programm does not look for a hard drive or a specific drive. Just put
a disk into the drive. Data files are saved in the hard disk.
4. The programms I have this problem are: First page 2000 (html editor),
Ghostview and FontViewr.

That almost leads me to suspect that this may be somehow related to an
overheating problem. Have you checked the coolings and/or removed
the dust from inside the computer case recently?

All of this tends to focus the attention on the hard drive, and on a
possibly temperature related problem with it.

Does your computer's BIOS setup support S.M.A.R.T. monitoring for the
hard drive? If so, is this active? Many computers are shipped with
S.M.A.R.T. capable BIOS but with this function disabled in the BIOS
setup.

Also check the hard drive manufacturer's web site for a drive testing
utility. Some manufacturer's have a Windows based test utility. If
one is available for your make of drive then download and install it
and run it when the errors are actually happening.

Good luck

Me too, I believe, the problem has to do with overheating...
Thank you for your help and providing all the information...
Merry Christmas,
Paul
