Error message - 'windows explorer has encountered a problem and......'

Can anyone help? Whenever I try to open a file or
programme (although not all programmes) or use Internet
explorer to go on-line an get the error
message 'Windows/internet explorer has encountered a
problem and has to close' This means than I cannot get
into programmes like 'my computer' or 'control panel'.

I can get on-line by using MSN internet explorer.

I have (as advised) carried out a security check through
Symantec but it said that I have no viruses or Trojan
horses.

I don't really want to reinstall the XP operating system.

Grateful for any advice.

Russell, if you can get to Start>Run Type: sfc /scannow Have your
WinXP CD in the cdrom drive. You can also
try a System Restore. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System
Restore. If none of that helps try a

Try going to control-panel,ADM.,open event viewer for more specific
details.You might also see where youre settings are in internet options
and readjust.
