error message: Windows Could Not Start Because the C:\windows\system32\system File is missing or cor

Hello all! So...the above is the beginning of the problem. It gets worse though.
The internal cd drive will not work either, so we have been unable to use the fix-it disk. also we tried to use a diskette but it is a fat? not an ntfs? One more thing, we went out and bought an external cd-rom drive but of course the pc wont read that either.

So basically the laptop wont start at all. PLEASE HELP.

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read this first...

After your system is restored, the ERUNT utility available here may
make it easier to fix the problem if it recurs...

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.
