For no apparent reason, I can no longer send email. I get the following
message;
The host 'smtp.verizon.net' could not be found. Please verify that you have
entered the server name correctly.
Subject 'test', Account: 'mail.verizon.net', Server: 'smtp.verizon.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number:
0x800CCC0D

I have tried rebooting the computer to no avail. Problem began yesterday
when no changes were made to computer. All settings appear correct. Any
ideas?

Assuming the server isn't down and if you're still connected to Verizon.net,
try deleting the account, reboot then re-add the account.

I had the EXACT same problem that began at the exact same time with verizon
although no error msg came back. The emails just sat in the outbox and yes
all the settings were correct. I did just as Dguess suggested and now it's
all ok.
I'd love to know what this happened. I'm using a fairly new toshiba laptop
with vista

Your email account settings may have become corrupted by the
email scanning feature of your antivirus program.
If you read all the posts in this newsgroup you'll see
that is a common thread.
