Error message when importing favorites from network computer.

I am trying to import favorites from my desktop to my notebook. They are
networked. I get all the way through the Import Wizard, and get an error
message: "Not a Valid bookmark file." Both computers have 6.0. Any
suggestions?

Hi Steve :)

I have had this annoying situation too. After sevear tries and no results,
I decided to give the deep six the Wiz and winged it. It worked just fine.

Go to the folder location where you have the Favorites in the Windows
Explorer.
Folder locations for XP:
Documents and settings

Administrator (or name) profile

Favorties (my folder has a Star by it, YMMV)

<User name> profile

Favorites (no star by this one on mine)

Open the Favorites folder

Click Edit>Select all
Create a new folder called HOLD
Paste the all Favorites you just copied into this folder.
Copy this folder to a floppy disk
Put the floppy into your laptop
Highlight and copy all the Favorites in the HOLD folder on the floppy
Find the location of the Favorites folder on the laptop
Paste the Favorites from HOLD folder to that folder

Then open the browser on the laptop and see if they are there.

Did you Export them first? If you did not, then you cannot Import but
you can just copy the contents of the Favorites folder from one to the
other.

Thank you. I had not exported them first. When I did export them, and made
them shared on my network, it worked fine. I may have missed it, but I don't
recall this step being clear in the instructions. Anyway, thank you!

Thank you for your time. Per the second response I received, I was able to
get it to work fine by exporting the bookmarks first from the source computer.

Thanks for the feedback.
No, it is not particularly clear and many people fall into the same
trap.

Jan I tried to do what you explained, I used the search function of my XP Pro
to find the favorites file.
when i select all then copy, i get to the favorites folder paste is not an
option. If i select the entire book mark file i exported and past it in
favorites then it is there, when i open the favorites then the book mark
folder, the favorites appear on the IE window rather than in the favorites
column!
how can I correct this?
Thank You
Richard

Hi,
You're replying to a thread from Feb 14-16, 2005.
But, see if this helps...
The bookmarks.htm file exported by Internet Explorer can be imported
(usually) but not pasted into another Favorites folder. Use the Import
feature to import this htm file into the new/2nd/other computer.

If you try to copy and paste Favorites from one machine to another, copying
and pasting a limited of favorites each time (20, 30, 40) may work better
for you.

Please post back (reply) to this message if you have additional trouble
importing Favorites.

Hope this helps,
Don

Yes, it was old, but you responded! Thank you
my system is not networked by the way.
I tried to import them from a cd i burnt them to. I am told it is a "not a
valid" bookmark file.
side question, i try to email them, this and any other attachments i try to
email and save are always saved as an attachment not the actual file.
example, if it was a picture, i could not save it, i would have to open it in
picture viewer then save it, what is the deal with that?

Hi,
On the CD, do you have the exported htm file, bookmarks.htm or do you have
the Favorites folders ?
