Error message when I open folders with videos

When I try to open Windows Explorer, as soon as I open a folder with even one
video in it, I get a "...encountered a problem and needs to close" message.
I thought I was overloading my files but I've saved all my vids to disc and I
was able to open the empty folder until I downloaded one small clip and got
the same problem. I rebooted to "safe menu" and "last known working
configuration" and still have the problem. It happens even in safe mode.
Can someone please help me to view my folders with videos in them?
Thank you.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

What I ended up doing is restoring my system back about three weeks and that
seemed to correct the problem. However, I deleted "Windows Defender" before
I did the restore (thinking that program may have had a problem) and now, on
reboot, I get a box that says "Application failed to initialize0x800106ba,
etc". I can't re-install Defender, nor can I delete whatever it is that's
looking for the program.

You seem to be very knowledgable... do you have any ideas on this one?
Thank you for your quick reply to my first problem.

It's probably this entry that when you deleted "Windows Defender". If
you deleted rather than uninstalled you will get registry entries left
in place.

Autoruns (freeware) is a useful tool for looking at what loads on start
up.

A safer way than msconfig to disable / remove unwanted start up items is
to use Autoruns.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

You will find the entry you want on the Log On tab.

XviD.dll freezes/crashes and causes Windows Explorer to close

This problem usually occurs when you're browsing a folder containing
XviD videos and Explorer tries to create thumbnail previews of the
videos using an outdated version of the XviD codec that's installed.
When it fails you get an error message about Explorer encountering a
problem with xvid.dll and having to close down (Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close).

As the xvid.dll file hasn't been used for quite some time its presence
on your system suggests that you've still got an outdated version of the
XviD codec installed. Just installing the latest version of the XviD
codec over the old one won't fix the problem as it doesn't remove the
old files and registry settings. You first need to uninstall all
previous versions of the XviD codec and verify that the problem goes
away. Then you should install the latest version of the XviD codec.

Gerry,
This sounds like we're getting closer to the problem. I've downloaded the
newest version of XviD codecs but didn't start the program yet. I've done a
search to find any of the codecs on my system and found an "xvid.dll" file in
my "system32" file. Do I just delete this file and then re-install the new
file. I'm just afraid that I'm so close and don't want to do anything wrong
at this point.

You have no idea how much I appreciate all of your help and I hope that this
will be the last time I'll have to bother you. God Bless You.

Nick.

Hello nsaintj

I hope that you don't mind me piggy backing on your thread because I am
having a very similar problem. My problem usually starts be clicking on an
avi file. I then get the error message and Windows Explorer must close.
When I restart Win Explorer, I have the same problem again if I click on any
type of video file or by just opening the folder itself (not clicking on any
file).

My problem seems to be related to emzdecmp4_h263.dll, as you can see from
the information that I've copied from the event viewer below:

I also find it unusual that I don't have any system restore points. I
don't know if one situation has anything to do with the other.

nsaintj, I feel your pain, and I too would be grateful for any help on this
problem.

Thanks

I'm waiting on Gerry's reply and that may help you too. We do seem to be
suffering the same situation here. I've found the .dll file that he was
talking about and I'm just waiting to learn whether I can just delete this
file before starting the update program that I've already saved. I hope our
situations are similar enough where you'll also be able to benefit from his
help. I'll be sure to post my results so you can figure out whether or not
it'll work for you too. The problem has been driving me crazy and Gerry
seems to be a real Godsend.

Good luck.

Deletion is not the answer.

Quote: You first need to uninstall all previous versions of the XviD
codec and verify that the problem goes away.

The operative word for me is "uninstall". Select Start, Control Panel,
Add / Remove Programs, Change or Remove Programs. Place the cursor on
Xvid and click on Remove. After completion exit and restart your
computer. The xvid.dll driver should no longer be on your system. Check
your system 32 folder.

Assuming it has gone reinstall the latest version
http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

After any significant software change you should cleanup.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Well, I bit the bullet and did what Gerry suggested and it seems to have
gotten the job done. Our problems are similar and I'm not sure if you can
fix yours like I did mine. However, the file that's giving you trouble may
also be related to the xvid.dll file. I would say set a restore point first
and then try downloading the Divx codecs program and attempt what I did. I,
now, can open files with vids in them and explorer isn't crashing anymore. I
use Ashampoo media player and it's recognizing Divx files and playing them
with no problem.

Again, Good Luck.

stpes to solve this problem

1. In the registry search for the emzdecmp4_h263.dll which is causing the problem in the key called "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID"
a. if you dont know any thing about the registry then on the run prompt type the command called "regedit". This will open the registry.
2. When u got the sucess in search look for whole dll path.
3. use the REGSVR32 command to unregister the dll.
e.g. REGSVR32 /U "full path of the dll/emzdecmp4_h263.dll"
